Lock Repairs in London

A lock that has become stiff, gritty or unreliable is usually warning you before it fails completely. If you are lifting the handle harder each week or jiggling the key to get it out, book a repair now rather than a lockout later.

Plenty of faults that look terminal are not. Misaligned strike plates, dropped doors, worn followers, dry mechanisms and swollen timber all cause symptoms people mistake for a broken lock. Where the mechanism can be saved, we save it.

Repair or replace — an honest answer

We will tell you when a repair is a false economy. If a 20-year-old gearbox has already been rebuilt once, or the lock body is worn beyond tolerance, replacing it is the right call and we will say so. Equally, if all your door needs is a hinge adjustment and a strike plate moved 3mm, that is what we will do — and nothing more.

Alignment is the usual culprit

Doors move. Timber swells in winter, uPVC expands in summer, and hinges sag under the weight of a solid door. When the lock no longer lines up with the keep, the mechanism takes strain every time it is used until something inside gives. Correcting the alignment protects the lock you already have.

Do not force it

If a key is stiff, stop and call. The two worst outcomes we see both start the same way: forcing a stiff key until it snaps in the cylinder, or lifting a failing uPVC handle so hard the gearbox shears with the door locked shut. Both turn a ten-minute service into an emergency.

FAQs

Lock Repairs — your questions

Can you repair a lock instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. Alignment faults, dry or dirty mechanisms, worn handles and loose fixings are all repairable. We only recommend replacement when the lock body itself is worn out, has been forced, or no longer meets the security standard your insurer asks for.

My key is stiff in the lock — is that serious?

Treat it as an early warning. It usually means wear, dirt, or misalignment, and it usually gets worse. Do not use oil or WD-40 — oil attracts dirt and makes it worse. A proper service now is far less disruptive than an emergency call-out later.

Why does my door only lock if I lift and push hard?

That is a classic alignment problem on uPVC and composite doors. The hooks are not meeting the keeps cleanly, so you are forcing the mechanism. Left alone it will eventually shear the gearbox, often when the door is locked.
